A lifter sits between the cam lobe and the valve and takes up the slack in between, so the valve opens exactly as far and as long as the lobe says it should. On a 4G63 that has covered some miles, tired lash adjusters bleed down overnight and start the top-end tick that every Evo owner recognizes, and the noise only gets louder once stiffer valve springs go in. The Zero-Tick design from GSC is built to hold lash under that load, so the head stays quiet and the valve events stay honest.
