The rear upper arm controls how far the top of the rear wheel leans, so soft bushings here turn a carefully set rear camber figure into something that moves around depending on how hard the car is being driven. In practice that means the rear tires never quite give consistent grip through a corner and the inside edges wear faster than they should. Polyurethane bushings hold the arm to its length and its angle so the alignment stays as measured.
