The trailing arm holds the rear wheel in place along the length of the car, resisting the shove backwards under braking and the pull forwards under power. Its front bushing carries all of that, and when it perishes the wheel is free to move a few millimeters each way, which changes rear toe at the worst possible moment and makes the back of the car feel loose over bumps mid-corner. Firmer bushings give the rear axle a fixed reference to work from again.
