The differential is bolted to the car through rubber, and that rubber is what lets the whole unit rock forwards and backwards each time torque arrives or disappears. Once it has aged, you get the familiar clunk when you lift off and pick the throttle back up, plus a vague delay before drive properly reaches the road. Polyurethane mounts hold the housing far more firmly, so power delivery feels immediate and the driveline stops shunting.
