The trailing arm is what stops the rear wheel being pushed backwards every time you brake and dragged forwards every time drive arrives, and the lower front bushing takes the brunt of both. Worn rubber there lets the wheel move fore and aft a few millimeters, which changes rear toe at exactly the moment the car is trailing into a corner and is a big part of why a tired Evo feels like it is steering from the back. Polyurethane pins the arm and gives the rear end a fixed reference again.
