Every bit of damping force the rear shock generates has to pass through its mounting bushing before it reaches the car, which makes this small part a surprisingly effective way to waste a good damper. When it perishes, part of each input is absorbed as squish instead of being controlled, the rear feels floaty over undulations and you often get a knock from the back over sharp edges. Replacing it lets the damper do the job you paid for.
