Multi-layer steel asks more of the engine than the gasket it replaces: the layers seal by springing against the surfaces they are clamped to, which means the block deck and the head face both need to be genuinely flat and finished to the standard MLS wants before the gasket goes anywhere near them. Get that right and it will hold cylinder pressures that would have pushed a composite gasket out years ago. Skip it and no gasket will save the job.
