Charge air leaves the turbo hot, and hot air is thin air, so the intercooler is what decides how much of the boost on the gauge actually reaches the cylinders. The factory core does a reasonable job until you start asking for back-to-back pulls or sit in traffic on a hot day, at which point it heat soaks and the tune quietly pulls timing to protect the engine. A larger core holds its intake temperatures for longer, which shows up as consistency rather than a single big number.
